Oakland man may be unfit to stand trial for murder

The mental state and stability of a defendant must not only be taken into account when considering his or her involvement in the alleged incident they are accused of but also before and during arraignment and trial proceedings. In order for a fair trial to be conducted, the defendant has to be capable of understanding the charges against him; he must also be able to play a responsible role in the handling of his criminal case. If the person's mental health is in question, he may be evaluated to see if and when he will be fit to stand trial. This is the case for one man facing multiple murder charges in Oakland, California.

Since he was placed in custody in the Alameda County Jail the defendant was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. His attorney claims that the man's health and weight are also currently affected by his condition.

Given the circumstances, an Oakland judge has ruled that the defendant be placed in the care of a psychiatric facility for treatment. Psychiatrists will report back to the court regarding the man's mental competence regularly and he will be expected to face a criminal trial should he be deemed fit.

The man's psychiatric care will involve the administration of medication and therapy. His progress, if any, will be monitored by his physicians and relayed to the judge. The man in question is accused of killing seven people at Oikos University in April 2012. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
