California students being investigated for alleged sexting crimes

The internet is a useful and fun resource that people of all ages have taken to for information and socializing. Teenagers make up an especially large presence on social media sites. Unfortunately, the internet has also become a tool for people to use to harm others or commit crimes. Teenagers might not realize that something that can seem like an innocent prank can actually be classified as an internet sex crime.

Kids love to share pictures and stories with their friends, and many of them may be unaware of the criminal consequences that can result from sharing certain types of pictures. Five students from Etiwanda and Rancho Cucamonga high schools are being investigated on suspicion of sharing semi-nude pictures of female students between the ages of 15 and 16. The pictures were shared by text message and internet social media sites.

School administrators say they discuss the issue of sexting throughout the year, and will bring up this important topic again as a result of the investigation. Some students already realize the seriousness of such actions, and say that their peers should learn the consequences now, so their future isn’t affected. What many girls may not realize is that they can also be found guilty of a crime by sending nude pictures of themselves. Sending sexually explicit photos of minors is a felony in California.

Teenagers who are accused of internet crime will need representation to help them through the legal process, and if possible to try to negotiate their penalties with a judge.
