Man accused of DUI in Pebble Beach crash denies driving drunk

It can often be tempting for juries to automatically assume a person with drunk driving charges is guilty, especially if the case involves a fatal accident. When someone is accused of driving under the influence, it isn’t always an open-and-shut case. Any time someone contests a DUI charge, he or she has the right to fair representation and treatment in court, no matter how much evidence authorities have that could prove the person guilty.

A 30-year-old construction CEO from Pebble Beach is currently trying to prove his innocence of drunk driving, after a head-on collision that killed two elderly pet shop owners earlier this month. Authorities have accused the man of drunk driving. Speculation is that the man and his passenger were driving from the Pebble Beach Food & Wine festival, which had ended a few hours prior to the accident, although the California Highway Patrol hasn’t released details on where the couple was driving to or from.

The man’s attorney says his client wasn’t driving from the festival or any other nearby parties, and was not intoxicated. He has accused local law enforcement and media of sensationalist journalism and character assassination for their own gain.

Authorities are trying to find out for certain whether the man and his passenger had been drinking before the accident. Meanwhile, the driver has been charged with one count of driving under the influence and two felony counts of vehicular manslaughter.

The driver has expressed deep regret for the deaths of the women, but maintains his innocence in driving drunk. Despite the results of an accident, if someone accused of a crime insists he or she is innocent, laws are in place to protect that individual’s rights and find out for certain whether or not alcohol was a factor in an accident.
