Two juveniles charged in Oakland robbery

As we’ve discussed recently, young people are vastly influenced by the people they associate with and the behaviors they observe while growing up. This can make the difference between becoming a successful, law-abiding adult or choosing a life of crime. Many juvenile advocates believe that young people need strong guidance after being charged with a juvenile crime to give them the chance to turn their lives around, rather than jail time or other harsh penalties.

Two minor teenagers were arrested along with three people above age 18 in Oakland a few weeks ago, after a violent robbery of three older women. According to police, one person waited in a getaway car while the other four, including the juveniles, approached the women--an 86-year-old and her two daughters, ages 60 and 57--and proceeded to rob them. They took a laptop and other items before knocking down the elderly woman and dragging her when she refused to give up her purse.

The group was apprehended by police several blocks away, and the items returned to the women. The minor boys, ages 14 and 15, were taken to Juvenile Hall. They were charged with two counts of robbery, one count of attempted robbery, and one count of elder abuse.

One of the men involved, a 19-year-old who was 18 at the time of the robbery, faces life in prison if convicted, under the three strikes rule. Reportedly, he had also committed crimes as a juvenile. This is an example of how children learn from those around them.

To prevent younger juveniles from growing up and facing years behind bars or worse, at-risk children need firm guidance, a positive support system, and advocates who will represent their rights in court.
