San Francisco boy charged as adult in shooting crime

It’s a sad fact that many young people are accused of juvenile crimes. Children are sometimes caught up in illegal activity with older people, and some have been raised with negative examples that can affect their behavior. For whatever reason they are in jail or a juvenile detention center, no child charged with a crime should have to endure inhumane living conditions. Everyone should be treated fairly in the justice system and not subjected to cruel and unusual punishment.

After a shooting at a San Francisco bus stop that killed a 19-year-old man and wounded his 17-year-old girlfriend, a 20-year-old man and a 14-year-old boy were arrested. Both have pleaded not guilty to their charges of murder, attempted murder, dissuading a witness and other serious charges. Authorities have not yet released a possible motive.

The 14-year-old’s public defender is upset over the conditions in which the boy is being held at the Juvenile Justice Center. She says he’s being underfed, has no educational tutor, is only allowed out of his cell twice a day for 30 minutes, and is not allowed to go outside. In addition to saying the boy’s living conditions are inhumane, she has criticized the prosecutors for charging the boy as an adult. California law says that some children as young as 14 years old can be charged as adults.

Whether or not the boy actually took part in the shooting, he is still entitled to be treated as innocent until proven guilty. This includes being given the right to decent meals and being allowed to exercise and get fresh air at the place where he’s being held.
