Oakland man penalized by Idaho authorities in prostitution case

When a person who is a resident of one state is arrested for committing a crime in another, the question often arises as to which state’s justice system he or she will have to answer to. While special circumstances may dictate exemptions to this policy, it’s generally the state in which the crime was committed that has jurisdiction over the case. That can be even more problematic for a suspect in that the penalties that he or she could be facing will often change from state to state. While a certain criminal charges may have a standard required penalty in California, that penalty could be much different, and much harsher, in the state in which the crime was committed.

An Oakland man is currently learning his own lesson in interstate law after having been arrested and convicted in Idaho for his involvement in a prostitution ring. Authorities believe that he is among several who have recently been coming from California to Idaho to engage in prostitution. Because the crimes have been committed in Boise, Idaho authorities were the ones who investigated and prosecuted the man’s case.

If one chooses to engage in criminal activity, he or she should be aware that the legal ramifications of his or her actions can be difficult to predict. That’s especially true if those crimes are committed far from home in states with different state-mandated penalties. Anyone facing criminal charges may want to have an experienced criminal defense lawyer on his or her side to help ensure fair treatment from the court.
