Teen arrested, Sacramento woman charged with sex trafficking

Police and prosecutors in California have begun to take a more understanding approach in cases of juvenile prostitution, treating the young people as victims rather than criminals. When a young person is accused of prostitution, it may be possible to negotiate a reduction or dismissal of charges. In any case, a juvenile charged with a crime will need a strong criminal defense to protect his or her future.

Police in Oakland arrested a 16-year-old girl who is believed to have been forced to engage in sex acts for money. A 23-year-old Sacramento woman is accused of threatening and exploiting the girl, and the woman now faces a sex trafficking charge.

According to authorities, the woman placed sexually explicit ads on websites and often discussed pimp-related business on the phone and in text messages. Shortly after the teenager was arrested in Oakland, the woman now accused of pimping the girl made a recorded phone call from jail. Police claim the woman referred to the girl's arrest and said the girl would likely be taken to "juvenile hall."

The woman is accused of pimping the 16-year-old in Oakland, Sacramento and Bakersfield. Police say the woman also took the teen to Reno and Las Vegas. A federal grand jury indicted the woman on a single count of trafficking of a minor. She is also accused of transportation of a minor.

A conviction on those charges could lead to a sentence of between 10 years and life in prison.

A local news article doesn't specify the status of the juvenile's legal case.
