East Bay shootings leave 8 injured, 17-year-old dead

There are few things more disheartening than seeing a young person with so much positive potential make decisions that could result in a lifetime in prison. It's even more devastating when a young person is killed by gunfire on the streets. Everyone knows that young adults and juveniles make mistakes, but they should not have to pay for those mistakes with their lives.

This past weekend was a violent one in the East Bay. A 17-year-old boy was shot and killed, and eight other people were wounded in the area by gunfire. Friends of the deceased young man said that he had recently been released from juvenile detention.

In the shooting that apparently took the young man's life, two other people were also hit. One is in critical condition, and a woman who was described as a bystander suffered injuries that were not thought to be life-threatening.

According to witnesses, several shots were fired in front of a store near International Boulevard and 90th Avenue, and the person suspected of the shooting was wearing a ski mask at the time.

A news report indicates that surveillance video from a store near the shooting will probably be used in the investigation, but no-one had been arrested as of June 3.

A number of other shootings happened in other areas of Oakland. Five men and one woman were reportedly injured in five different incidents.

It's easy these days for young people to get mixed up in dangerous or otherwise illegal activities. That doesn't mean, however, that prosecutors have a good case in every instance. Young adults and juveniles, regardless of the crimes they are accused of, can be vulnerable to overcharging, and young people who have been accused of a crime will need legal representation that works to protect the defendant's future.
