Police: No sexual assault charges for Jose Canseco

Sexual assault is a serious crime, and prosecutors will seek the toughest penalties for people who are accused of sexual assault. Unfortunately, though, there are cases in which a person who claims to have been assaulted is lying. At the very least, this can lead to reputation damage for the falsely accused individual, but a strong criminal defense strategy can mitigate some of the negative effects as well as prevent police from even filing charges.

Former Oakland Athletics star Jose Conseco has seen his share of troubles in recent years. Bankruptcy and issues related to his past steroid use have made for some mean curveballs for the slugger, but perhaps the most serious of his battles started after a woman accused him of sexual assault.

According to Canseco, the woman accused him of drugging and raping her. "It was an outright lie," he said. "I proved it by taking two lie detector tests. I am the victim here."

Police in Las Vegas, where the criminal charges were filed, seem to have agreed with Canseco. Authorities will not pursue criminal charges, and Canseco says he has intentions of suing his accuser.

People criticized Canseco for disclosing the woman's identity and place of work, but in light of two polygraph tests he took in Las Vegas and Dallas, Canseco said, "If you have nothing to hide, why hide it?"

In general, people are quick to blame a person who has only been accused of a sex crime. As this case illustrates, not every accused person is guilty, and sometimes charges can't even be pursued because the evidence simply isn't there.
