County supervisor acquitted upon 3 felony charges

A California county supervisor was acquitted on three felony charges. It was claimed that he committed perjury, filed a false document concerning approximately $70,000 in state grants, and that he had a conflict of interest concerning a particular matter he purportedly participated in. However, he was found guilty concerning six misdemeanor charges concerning a supposed improper attempt to be provided bail money.

Prosecuting attorneys alleged a number of items concerning the supervisor's conduct. The allegations essentially claimed fraudulent conduct on his part in the submission of paperwork and the supervisor's efforts to conceal income. He also supposedly participated in votes where conflicts of interests were alleged.

The supervisor was understandably relieved following the outcome of this matter. A felony conviction would likely have led to this supervisor being forced out of office. The entire matter is not over for this individual, however, as the jury was deadlocked on a fourth felony fraud count. Prosecutors may announce at a June 6 hearing whether they intend to retry the supervisor on this particular fraud count.

Criminal defense matters such as this can often involve a lengthy prosecution. This particular matter involved a three-week trial that was prosecuted by both a county district attorney and the California Attorney General. And it takes much longer than three-weeks to prepare for criminal trial such as this one.

Criminal defense attorneys are needed to make certain that individuals charged can receive a fair trial upon every count. It provides little consolation for individuals to be acquitted upon one count only to be found guilty upon others.
