State facility commitments for juvenile crimes in California

Being convicted of a crime can cause a juvenile's life to be forever changed. There are many different consequences a conviction can have for a juvenile.

Juvenile crime defense attorneys understand how much the life of a juvenile who has been accused of a crime can be affected by how their case goes and what the outcome of their case is. Such attorneys can fight for the rights of juvenile suspects and fight for an outcome that will preserve a juvenile's ability to have a good future and to successfully move on from the situation.

Some of the potential consequences of a juvenile crime conviction can have major implications for a juvenile in both the present and the future. One such consequence is a state facility commitment.

Some juveniles found guilty of criminal activity are committed to a state facility, such as a Division of Juvenile Justice facility, for a time.

How common are state facility commitments? As of the end of this June, the number of state facility commitment cases in California was 681. Most of these commitments were related to either assault or robbery offenses. Specifically, nearly 37 percent of these commitments were related to assault offenses and a little over 33 percent of these commitments were related to robbery offenses.

Thirty-one of the commitments came from cases from Alameda County. This works out to about 4.6 percent of all state facility commitments. Only five counties in the state generated more state facility commitments than Alameda County (Los Angeles, Riverside, Sacramento, Fresno and Kern Counties).
