DUIs can mean more than just legal penalties

Have you ever stopped and thought about how much a DUI will costs someone? Even if it is your first time getting a drunk driving charge, it could cost you tens of thousands of dollars over the course of your life to "pay" for it.

So what financial factors are at play when you get a DUI that could possibly drive the costs of the charge that high? Let's take a look at a few of them:

  • First off are the legal fines associated with the charge. These are things such as bail, court fees, probationary fees, fines imposed by a judge, fees for jail time and sentencing, and many more.
  • Then there are the logistical financial factors at play. When you were pulled over and arrested by the police, your car was impounded. You have to pay for the impound. When the legal ordeal is over, you may not have your driver's license. So you'll have to pay to get around town. And to get your license reinstated (and possibly with the addition of an ignition interlock device), you will have to pay for it all too.
  • For many years after the charge, you will pay much higher insurance premiums than someone who does not have a DUI. This often makes up the bulk of the "cost" of a DUI, at least in the long term.

All of this is to say that you must defend yourself in the wake of a DUI charge. There are many ways to poke holes in the prosecution's case. Did the police act appropriately during the investigation? Did the field sobriety test or chemical test really prove their case? Were there mitigating circumstances involved in your particular case?
