Huge nationwide health care fraud bust announced by DOJ

"Big" is a relative term, of course, which can only be fleshed out in reference to a specific matter through comparison with something else in the same genre.

Consider health care fraud for a moment, which is a matter we impliedly underscored in a June 9 blog entry alluding to the "heightened climate of white crime scrutiny" that has been patently notable across the country in recent years.

A number of law enforcement probes and busts have been announced over that time, involving health-care defendants from virtually every state, including California.

And those have varied in their described dimensions -- both as to the number of alleged wrongdoers involved and the costs to a defrauded public -- and criminal law outcomes.

A health care fraud-related announcement issued with considerable fanfare late last week by U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions seemingly ends all debate -- at least presently -- regarding America's largest-ever bust in the care-delivery realm. Federal authorities say that they have just wrapped up a massive probe uncovering fraud and yielding arrests that is unprecedented in the nation's history.

Here are a few material findings that have been publicly released:

  • Criminal charges levied against 412 individuals, including 115 physicians
  • An alleged $1.3 billion in false billings uncovered by investigators
  • Scores of cases nationwide involving inappropriate opioid prescribing
  • Hundreds of care providers being banned from involvement with federal medical programs (e.g., Medicare and Medicaid)

Sessions tellingly denoted the sting operation as a "takedown." It reportedly entailed the participation of more than 1,000 state and federal agents from across the country.
